Across the Snowy Ranges
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
in Idaho and Western Montana
James R. Fazio, Mike Venso, and Steve F. Russell.
(c) 2001, ISBN 0-9615031-4-9
The book is hardcover and full color with 204 pages that include 76 color photos, 8 maps, and 13 special-feature sidebars.
The book has many gorgeous large color pictures with text that will capture and hold your attention. The maps are highly accurate and large-scale -- suitable for use in following the trail and locating the campsites. It also contains many sidebars telling different stories about the people and places. It covers the Lewis and Clark Trail westward in 1805 from Horse Prairie (Grant, Montana) to Lewiston and eastward in 1806 from Lewiston to Lolo, Montana. It also has a section on Ordway’s May-June 1806 trip from Kamiah to the Salmon and Snake Rivers to get Salmon. There is a final chapter explaining their complicated eastward return through Montana complete with a map to explain how the various parties split up and traveled. The central goal of the book was to publish striking color photos of the country along the trail along with precise, historically accurate text and maps.
